TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale
Assists Ship After Entanglement in Port Everglades

As the crew of the 600 foot oil tanker Eagle Miri retrieved their anchor in the Port Everglades anchorage, they soon realized it had been ensnared in hundreds of feet of large steel cable while on the ocean floor. The ship's agent contacted TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale immediately and the salvage team began formulating a plan. The 96' OSV M/V Richard L. Becker would provide the perfect platform for clearing the entangled anchor. Director of Operations Kevin Collins quickly noted that spark and flame producing methods of cutting would not be approved as this was an oil tanker sitting in a petroleum berth. He loaded a hydraulic power pack and hydraulic cable cutting tool on the deck of the Richard L. Becker and the crew steamed from the boat's home dock in Dania Beach to Port Everglades berth 13 where the Eagle Miri was moored. Once on scene, the crew worked from 4 P.M. until the early morning hours of the next day to cut off and dispose of the entangled cable. By 1 A.M. the Richard L. Becker was returning to her home dock and the Eagle Miri was cleared to sail.
