TowBoatU.S. New River Assists 252' Devonport
off Berth in Port Everglades

On a stormy afternoon in late April, the seas were 4 to 8 feet with east wind gusts up to 35 knots. A 252' Devonport was attempting to leave the dock located at Berth 11 in Port Everglades. Due to the dock's exposure to the inlet and lack of protection from the prevailing winds, the yacht could not successfully get off the dock under its own power.

A local shipping agent familiar with TowBoatU.S. New River's yacht towing services advised their professional crew of the yacht's situation. TowBoatU.S. New River's Director of Operations, Kevin Collins, was captain on the company's 46' Winningoff during this operation. He explained, “The winds and current held the yacht against the dock and it couldn't go to sea under its own power. I immediately requested two of our 26' tugs equipped with twin 225 hp John Deere engines to assist me. Both of these boats have large wheels, matched to large reduction gears and they are also keel cooled...all very important with the weight and draft of the vessel we were about to assist.

Once on scene, the TowBoatU.S. New River captains quickly made up tow lines to the bow, breast and stern of the yacht. The Captain of the yacht was instructed to keep her in neutral and allow the 3 tugs to ease her east and away from her berth. In short order, the TowBoatU.S. New River team successfully assisted the 252' Devonport away from the dock and towed her to the Port Everglades Turning Basin where she began her voyage under her own power.
