TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale’s Successful Helicopter Recovery
In early April, TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale faced a unique challenge when they received a call regarding a helicopter that had crashed off the coast of Key Biscayne, Florida. Thankfully, everyone survived the accident and the team quickly mobilized to recover the helicopter.
The crew, led by Salvage Master Russell Inman, responded in the 55’ R.E. Derecktor named the Lady Katherine accompanied by a 28’ SeaArk RHIB. The Lady Katherine is equipped with a hydraulic deck crane that has proven useful on many similar operations. Upon arrival, the team used the SeaArk to scout the depth surrounding the casualty while a diver began recovering debris and rigging straps for lifting.
After confirming sufficient water depth for the Lady Katherine to approach the helicopter, the crew carefully lowered the crane’s wire and slowly lifted the helicopter from the water allowing it to drain as it ascended above the stern.
After de-watering, the crew navigated to a more protected area to secure the aircraft to the deck for transport back to the dock. Upon arrival, the helicopter was lifted onshore and rinsed with fresh water and lubricated to prevent corrosion.
