M/V Richard L. Becker Assists ANAMAR with Sediment Collection

TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale's 96' OSV Richard L. Becker assisted ANAMAR Environmental Consulting with sediment collection as part of an operation related to a dredging permit late last year. ANAMAR specializes in environmental sampling, monitoring and data interpretations with special emphasis on dredge material and sediment evaluations. Recently, they were awarded a government contract to collect and analyze sediment at Port Everglades Harbor and at a reference site near the Port Everglades Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS). This area is located 4 nautical miles offshore Port Everglades in 640' to 705' depth of water.

ANAMAR chartered the Richard L. Becker twice recently to gather sediment samples for this contract. Captain Tom Guarino of the Richard L. Becker was provided specific coordinates and water depths for a reference site which was anticipated not to be affected by previous dredge material disposal. He accurately placed the scientists within feet of their desired positions for over 30 collections in depths up to 705'. Deckhand, Ben Bigelow of TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale recalled that on both occasions, "Our knuckle boom deck crane was used to facilitate the sediment collection with ANAMAR's machined clamshell, the operations went very smoothly and our customer was happy with the samples that they collected." Also, Terence Cake, Vice President of ANAMAR stated, "Besides the ease of use of our equipment with the Becker's crane, the large deck space allowed my technicians to work safely with the sampler and transfer the sediment samples to their respective containers."

Once the charters were completed, the sediment samples were shipped to laboratories in north Florida and Washington State where physical, chemical and bioassay analysis were performed. Scientists at ANAMAR will then analyze the resulting data to determine any potential environmental impacts that may be caused by placing the dredge material at the ODMDS. To learn more about ANAMAR Environmental Consulting, Inc. visit their website at www.anamarinc.com.
