100' Azimut Towed Back to the U.S. from Dominican Republic
TowBoatU.S. New River's 96', long range towboat Richard L. Becker got underway bound for the Dominican Republic on the morning of May 2nd after studying marine forecasts and awaiting conditions benign enough to tow a 100' motoryacht from Casa De Campo to Miami, Florida. The crew knew that conditions would be rough on their southeastern trek toward the casualty. Transiting during this period with seas approaching 12 feet was imperative in order to catch the short period of calm seas that was forecasted for the tow. The towing hawser and bridle were rigged for the long tow with a large section of nylon line in the middle of the hawser to ease the strain on the deck hardware of the vessel being towed. Chafe protection was fitted to the bridle to protect the yacht from damage and the propeller shafts were locked to ensure transmission damage was avoided. Thanks to careful planning and the cooperation of Mother Nature, the crew never saw seas over 3' during the entire tow home. The 100' Azimut arrived safely in Miami on the evening of May 13th and was towed up the Miami River by two of the company's 31' twin diesel tugs.
This tow illustrates TowBoatU.S. New River's unique ability to safely and professionally accomplish long distance towing operations for vessels of all sizes. The total towing distance of this operation was nearly 1000 miles but it is important to note that the Richard L. Becker has a range that can accomplish tows from ports as distant as the Eastern Caribbean. Please contact TowBoatU.S. New River for more information on local or long distance yacht towing.
