TWIC Deadline Extended
The Department of Homeland Security has announced that persons needing a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) will have until April 15, 2009, rather than Sept. 25, 2008 as originally announced.
One exception to the April 15, 2009 compliance date is, owners and operators of facilities located within the Port Zones of Boston, Northern New England, and Southeastern New England will need to comply by October 15, 2008.
As you may already know, TWIC cards must be obtained by any Coast Guard credentialed mariners and personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas within any U.S. port. To obtain a TWIC, an individual must sit for a digital photograph, provide fingerprints, and successfully pass a security threat assessment.
Although the compliance date has been extended, DHS suggests that everyone enroll as soon as possible. You can pre-enroll online at www.tsa.gov/twic. Pre-enrollment can speed up the process by allowing workers to provide information and schedule a time to complete the application process in person.
