Hurricane Season Has Arrived
June 1st marks the official start of the 2009 Hurricane season; with that is the uncertainty of what this new season will bring. The management at TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale is reviewing their Hurricane procedures, purchasing necessary equipment and supplies and administering recurring training to the staff to insure that they are prepared in the event of a hurricane. The company developed a 26 page hurricane preparedness plan in the wake of the 2004 hurricane season when Jeanne and Frances wreaked havoc on Florida's Treasure Coast. President Larry Acheson explained "I felt it was important to have a detailed plan in place so every member of our team would understand their role in preparing the company's property, vessels and equipment for an impending storm. Further, we made specific plans to insure that our employees needs are addressed in the plan both pre and post storm. Our people are our most important asset and insuring their safety and wellbeing will allow us to provide prompt service to our customers in the unfortunate event of a storm."
TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale has responded to salvages from Port St. Lucie to Miami over the past 5 hurricane seasons with as many as three separate salvage teams at work simultaneously. The maintenance staff is responsible for keeping the company's salvage inventory in optimal working condition to insure equipment related delays are kept to a minimum. The salvage crews successfully completed jobs ranging from a 43' Tiara Express impaled by a piling through the center of her cockpit making it necessary to use an underwater chainsaw to cut the piling and extract the vessel to mega yachts sunk and mostly inverted. Operations manager Kevin Collins stated "It is the tricky jobs like these that set our company apart; we have gained a lot of experience over the past 20 years. Jobs that would have seamed nearly impossible ten years ago when I started working here are more commonplace today as a result of our cumulative years in the salvage business." The company has always been focused on providing reliable towing and salvage services at a fair price and looks forward to another twenty years of service to the marine community.
