Our Marine Trade Schools - A Great Resource
For the Future of Our Industry
When searching for an entry level marine mechanic in Broward County Florida, a great place to start is a trade school. One such school is Mcfatter Technical School.
TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale has successfully hired several students from this program that have been productive members of the team, several of whom have been promoted to other positions within the company. South Broward High School also offers a Magnet program in Marine Mechanics. These schools focus primarily on the technical skills required to become a Marine Service Technician. They are also spending increasing time teaching the students about the soft skills that are required to be a productive member of today’s workforce. Some of the course work includes theory and practical training in:
- Marine Electronics
- Marine Engine Rigging
- Outboard Engine Repair
- Inboard gas and diesel engine repair
- Marine Drive Train - Running gear
- Marine Sub-Systems
Two of TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale’s most recent hires were graduates of one of these two schools. Dalton Stirrat came to TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale from South Broward High with a great knowledge of marine mechanics, life experience on family boats and his captain’s license. He is one of the company’s Commercial Division Specialists and is working toward becoming a Patrol Captain. Kevin Embres graduated from the Marine Service Technologies School at Mcfatter. Kevin is one of three mechanics that work full time for the company keeping the fleet in tip top shape. Kevin just assisted with the complete refit of the company’s 26’ twin diesel steel tug boat Shillelagh. He had the chance to work on each system on the boat and put what he learned at Mcfatter to use in a real world setting. The Management at TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale appreciates the space that these two schools fill in training future leaders in the Marine Industry and they hope to keep putting these bright graduates to work for many years to come.
