New Artificial Reef Created off Pompano Beach
Crowds of boating, fishing and diving enthusiasts gathered on Saturday July 23rd to witness the sinking of the latest addition to the impressive collection of artificial reefs located off the Southeast Florida Coast. The ship spent her working life as a sludge tanker named Newtown Creek. An impressive ship measuring 324 feet in length. She was recommissioned as Lady Luck and transformed into an interactive underwater art exhibit. Once you relocate a ship from New York to Florida, change her name and build an art exhibit on board, what comes next? You sink her of course!
Resolve Marine Group was hired to perform the task of sinking the vessel in a controlled manner. TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale’s 96’ OSV Richard L. Becker and her crew were hired to assist in the task. Crews methodically flooded compartments resulting in the ship slowly settling into the sea. In the closing moments before she slipped underwater, the vessel heeled to starboard, released air from several spaces, straightened back up and sunk straight to the bottom as planned. The new attraction has already been visited by hundreds of divers. She is located offshore of the Pompano Pier. This new attraction is a great reason to fill up your scuba tank and your fuel tank and head offshore for a day on and under the water!
