Careers in the Towing and Salvage Industry
The scope of the Marine Towing and Salvage industry is as broad as the many vessels that you might encounter on any given day upon the waters of the world. A job in this industry could range from assisting in the recovery of the Costa Concordia, to towing a bass boat that ran out of gas on a lake in Georgia. The world of “Recreational” Marine Towing and Salvage is a bit narrower but certainly never boring. A day in the life of a TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale Captain could involve one or more of the following activities:
- Towing a disabled 25’ center console
- Towing a 120’ Mega Yacht
- Transporting cargo and passengers to a large ship offshore
- Towing a disabled boat back from the Bahamas
- Deploying and recovering containment boom around a ship at her berth
- Performing maintenance and repairs on a tow boat
- Working as part of a salvage team on a Mega Yacht like the one pictured above
- Controlling recreational boat traffic for the Navy while one of their submarines works offshore
These are just a few of the tasks that a typical captain might undertake. Each job is as different as the weather conditions that affect it. There are also opportunities to work within the industry without being a licensed captain. TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale employs a staff of nearly 40 people. The support staff includes management, dispatch, accounting, IT, Human Resources, vessel, equipment and building maintenance as well as deck crew.
